Record is Dead! Long Live Record! The Props just announced Reason version 6 and it sure is one heck of an update. Yikes! I'm just getting comfortable with Thor, and Kong seems to be non-existent in my rack. (Mostly because I haven't had time to mess around with it). As an aside, they have been coming out with something new just about every year now ever since Record 1.0 was announced. I used the Record upgrade to finally upgrade to Reason 4, then I upgraded to Reason 5 and Record 1.5 last year. Now, of course, I'll be upgrading to Reason 6. Read on for what has changed and what is new... The New DealIt used to be Record was positioned for those who wanted to do live recording and Reason was for those who wanted to work with synths and samplers. If you wanted to do both, you purchased both and they worked together nicely. However, my thought is that this proved too hard to manage, for the Props from a development standpoint, and for users. You have two applications that only work with one or the other version of the other app, so you are constantly trying to figure what version of what you have. The whole thing was just confusing. No more. Now, Record is going away completely and all of its features are being rolled into Reason. What used to be known as the Reason/Record duo is now just Reason. If you don't need everything in the rack, you can buy a stripped down version called Reason Essentials, which looks like a stripped down Record Mixer with a Reason 3.0 (ish) device stack. Except no Malstrom - curious - I guess it's not essential :). What's NewThere are three new devices in this update. The Delay, Pulverizer, and Alligator. I'll cover each one when Reason 6 is out and I pick up my copy. For now, you can head on over the the Props web site to check out the new stuff in Reason 6 and the various upgrade paths.
What do you think of the new devices? How do you think you will use them? Anything you don't see that you wish was there?
